Who is responsible for this site

Usage statistics

To understand which articles are read, we use Umami, an open-source analytics program that we host on our own servers. We do not use any third-party analytics provider.

It sets no cookies and stores no identifier on your device, and it does not follow you across other sites. For each page viewed we record the page address, the referring site, the country, and the type of browser, operating system and device.

Your IP address and browser identification are used only momentarily to generate a pseudonymous code, with a key that is replaced every 24 hours, and are never stored. We cannot identify individual visitors or recognise them from one day to the next.

The legal basis is our legitimate interest in measuring the audience of the site in aggregate, under Article 6(1)(f) of the GDPR. We do not sell or share this data, and we do not use it for advertising.

Because nothing is stored on your device for this purpose, the site shows no consent banner for statistics.

Contact form

If you write to us, we collect your name, email address and message so that we can reply. The legal basis is pre-contractual steps and our legitimate interest in responding to enquiries.

Please do not include clinical or health information in your message. This form is not a crisis support service.

Who processes data on our behalf

Netlify, Inc. (United States) — Site hosting and DNS. Logs requests and IP addresses in order to serve pages and protect the service. Transfers are covered by standard contractual clauses.

Contentful GmbH (Germany) — Content management system. Article images are served from its delivery network, so your browser contacts that domain when a page loads.

Forminit (formerly Getform) — Receives messages sent through the contact form.

Vimeo, Inc. (United States) — Only when you play a video. Videos are not loaded automatically: a preview is shown and the video is requested only after you click.

How long we keep data

Aggregate statistics are kept for as long as they are useful for following how the site develops. Contact form messages are kept only as long as needed to reply and follow up.

Your rights

You have the right to access your data, to correct or erase it, to restrict or object to processing, and to receive it in a structured format. You can exercise these rights through our contact details.

If you believe your data is not being handled properly, you may complain to the Portuguese data protection authority, the CNPD, at www.cnpd.pt, or to the supervisory authority where you live.
